FIFTEEN

“Penalties are prepared for mockers,

and beatings for the backs of fools.”

The conversation with Elaine Hansen didn’t go as expected. By now she was aware Harlan turned himself over to authorities and made it a priority to bring herself up to speed since she picked Victoria up from the hospital a day earlier. Besides, it was her job to know these things, and it was her responsibility to keep the company running until her boss returned.

When Harrison entered his dad’s company he had no intention of stopping at the front desk. He walked directly past the young receptionist without glancing. Normally he would have followed protocol and waited politely in the lobby. Today was not normal.

The receptionist wasn’t about to stop the owner’s son, who looked like he was on a mission. Fortunately for her, Elaine was standing within view of Harrison and greeted him before the young lady had to respond. Elaine guided Harrison to her office, which was situated next to his father’s corner suite.

“This is all a mistake, Harrison. Your dad is going to be out before the end of the day. Don’t worry. And by the way, don’t listen to anything the media is saying. They have no idea what they are talking about.”

Elaine started her version of the story from the time she picked up Victoria to when the media broke the news that morning.

Harrison couldn’t help but chuckle when he learned Victoria was in the mental ward, but even that was difficult surrounding the other turmoil.

The young man wanted to believe his dad would soon be released, but it was difficult to convince himself otherwise. It wasn’t too often if ever, federal agents made a mistake arresting someone. When the government makes an arrest it typically means they have been involved for several months. Harrison knew that his arrest wasn’t a mistake in identity.

He wasn’t feeling any better about the situation when he left. Elaine was delusional with blind devotion to her boss.

Harrison had one phone call left to make.

Benton Jeffers handled all the business legalities for Harlan Marks. Harrison thought Jeffers could give him the real story. He knew his father trusted Benton with everything.

Harrison left the building and immediately dialed Jeffers’ office. The secretary put him through to the attorney so quickly Harrison wondered if his father’s attorney was expecting this call.

“Harrison,” the somber voice on the other end of the phone confirmed. “What are your plans today?”

Harrison’s phone call was no surprise to Jeffers.

“I don’t know,” Harrison stumbled even though he knew he had a customer golf outing scheduled. “What the hell is going on?”

“I know this is very confusing for you, but here’s what I can tell you. Your dad is definitely in trouble. He has a hearing today at 3:30. Although I am not representing your dad in his criminal defense, I will still be there for support. Think you can make the hearing? He needs your support.”

“OK,” was all Harrison could add.

Jeffers went on, “After the hearing, I would like you to come to my office.
